Saturday (Almost!) Shout Outs!

Whoop whoop! Welcome to another edition of the Saturday Shout Outs! Yes- I know it's Sunday, but that is a detail you will just have to get over! My name is Carl, and for the next 9 bullet points I will be your guide through exciting adventures, prayer requests and random ramblings on this lovely Sunday morning. So strap in and hold on tight- and let's get this show on the road!!!

  • Marilyn & I had to bid a fond farewell this week to the computer that had been the home of this blog since August of 2009. The new model is all loaded up and ready to rumble. And it is so stinking fast!!! We also have a new washing machine which seems really slow. The ups and downs of new technology, huh?
  • My dear friend Teresa Reep Tysinger has not been feeling well and the doctors are still trying to determine the "why?" Please keep her in your prayers. And if you know Teresa, please let her know that Matilda is a fine name for her new car!
  • To all of my friends in faith who insist on using Old Testament scripture to proof-text your own beliefs, here are a couple of things to remember. First of all, if you are going to hold to OT law then you need to give up shellfish and pork, straighten the tassels on your robes and find some unsuspecting lamb to sacrifice. Either Jesus changed everything or he did not change anything. Scripture is not a collection of short stories, it is a continuous narrative. The revelations of the living God did not end with the canon of scripture; God is alive and working today. And if Jesus didn't change everything, if we are under law and not grace, then there is no Good News. Thus endeth today's sermon.
  • My friends Jun & Jennifer (Bob) Kuramochi have been living through a rough week over which they have no control. Keep them and their church in your prayers.
  • Lisa Kraus Spires and Sara Thacker Reiter celebrated birthdays yesterday, and I hope both had a marvelous day! Insert your own "Craft Nazis" joke here!
  • Last weekend the sadly misguided folks from Westboro Baptist Church came to Orlando to protest the funerals of some of the people murdered in the Orlando shootings. You may have seen on the news that they were met with a peaceful intervention by a group of citizens dressed an angels who stayed between the WBC group and the families of the victims. It was an incredible display of meeting hatred with love. What you may not know is that one of the organizing angels was Colleen Martin Hooks, a member of my Youth Group Hall of Fame. She (and her mom Cindy) was already one of my favorite people. Now she is my hero. Thank you Colleen for reminding us all that we can make a difference.
  • Max Rees, who was Senior Pastor during the years I served Springfield Friends Meeting, would have been 88 years old yesterday. I think of him often, and of his children and grandchildren even more frequently. It was an honor to spend 8 years as a part of that amazing family.
  • Will & Michelle rode both the new version of Soarin' and the new Frozen Ever After attractions at EPCOT on Friday. They give them both 4 thumbs way up- and that is saying something, because Will REALLY wanted to hate that Frozen ride!!!
  • We hope you all are having a great summer! If you are among the bazillions coming to central Florida in the next couple of months, let us know. We'd love to see you!
That seems like a good place to quit. By the way- there are gators in Florida. Our state university mascot is the Gator. We have a road called Alligator Alley. We have a theme park called Gatorland. This is not new information. My mom and dad used to have gators who would sun themselves on their driveway. Respect the gator, but don't let recent events scare you. They have always been here. It was their state first! Take care, be excellent to each other, and let's get together again soon!

Saturday Shout Outs!

Greetings and Salutations from Tampa! It's been a while since I shouted at you- October 3rd, 2015 was the last time- and so the time is right for shout outs, random ramblings and other things designed to make you go "hmmm..."  If this goes well I might keep blogging next week. So no pressure to comment or anything!

  • It's a quiet weekend here at Chez Jones. Marilyn, Will, Michelle and Lisa are all at Disney with Michelle's family for what promises to be a crazy couple of days! They are all dining together tonight at Tony's Town Square, so if you happen to be at the MK keep your eyes and ears peeled for the wild party. For those of you who know why I am not with them, I should tell you that my appeals to the powers that be at WDW have so far fallen on deaf ears. But hope springs eternal!!!
  • Lisa Kraus Spires informs me that her mom, Carol Kraus, will be undergoing some medical work this week. Please keep Carol in your prayers.
  • Our Tampa Bay Lightning keep hanging in there in this series with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Not only are the Bolts the underdogs, but they are playing without 2 of their best players. It's a fun time in this area- hard to believe a Florida city can get so excited about a hockey team! #GoBolts
  • It seems to me that electing Donald Trump as president is very similar to asking a cat to drive your car. We know it's a terrible idea, and we have a really good idea what the outcome will be. Yet people keep getting in the car. Toonces- look out!!!

  • Seeing my former youth group students from all over the country share pictures of their own families on Facebook is an amazing way to share in their journeys as parents. I am so proud of so many of them. But it is also a very effective way to remind me I am old. So it's a mixed bag!
  • My trip to NC at the end of April was a blast, and there is just something special about reconnecting with my oldest friends. It was especially great to get time with Beth McGalliard and Denise Langley and to toast my mom with them. Mom loved that old New Garden youth group so much. It was also great to see Mark & Martha Farlow, Carl & Diane Semmler, Alan Brown, Chuck & Tammy Foster and Susan Tuggle at a cookout at Martha's house. Great friends, a bowl of margaritas, a fruit salad made with olives, and doing shots of Fireball in honor of Beth and in memory of Lisa Moran- it just doesn't get any better! So who is planning the September 2017 reunion trip?  Anyone? Anyone?
  • And speaking of reunions, hey Kissimmee peeps!!!  When, where and how- not if- are the questions. It's time to start planning!!!
  • Did you see the new Jungle Book movie?  Will and I both give it 3 thumbs up. That's right, three. It was so good we grew new thumbs!!!
  • Speaking of movies, it's been an interesting Spring at the theater. Captain America: Civil War may be the best superhero movie ever made, while Batman v. Superman may be the worst. Zootopia was awesome, while Angry Birds commercials just make me angry. The one thing for sure is that from Star Wars through Civil War, Disney Studios are on a roll!
  • Will turns 21 in less than 2 months. Take that all of you former students who make me feel old!  Ha!
  • The tweets and articles coming out of the General Conference meeting of the United Methodist Church over this past week reminded me once again that there may be no greater oxymoron than "organized Christianity."
  • If someone gave you $1000 and told you to "spend it on something special- on something that makes you happy" - what would you do with it?
  • Some of the TV show cancellations hit me hard this past week. Lisa got me hooked on Castle and CSI:Cyber and now they are gone. I loved The Muppets and NPH's Best Night Ever and they will not return. And ABC also snuffed out Agent Carter and Galavant, two of my January favorites. What shows did you lose that you will miss?
  • While I was in NC, Denise and I drove out to Quaker Lake and saw some of the new facilities and reminisced about the old ones and our days at summer camp. So many wonderful memories, so many wonderful people are part of my life because of that special place. My prayers are with Heather and the 2016 staff as they prepare for another summer of changing lives in positive ways.
And that seems like a good place to stop. I'd love to hear from you, dear readers, and catch up with what's going on in your lives. Have a wonderful weekend and treasure those you love- and be thankful for those who love you! Peace, my friends!

    Saturday Shout Outs!

The great month of October has arrived, and with it comes great weather, great football, great birthdays and a new edition of my Saturday Shout Outs! There's a lot going on in my life, with plenty of prayers (both joys and concerns) and the fate of my moustache still up in the air! We've got all the news that fits, so buckle up, hang on and let's get ready to shout!

    • Lisa Kraus Spires (FUMC-Kissimmee) continues to ask for prayers for her youngest daughter Abby, who will be undergoing more tests for some seizure issues. We pray for Abby, Lisa and that the doctors will discover for certain what is going on. We also remember our friend and Abby's grandma Carol Kraus. Love you Lisa!
    • Zach Wehr (Wesley Memorial UMC) has started a new job with AUV Flight Services, where he will be working with unmanned aircraft (think drones) and spending a lot of time in Tuscon, AZ. Congratulations Zach!
    • Lisa Jewett lived at our house this week recovering from her 2nd chemo treatment, and we are glad to pass along the praise report that this cycle was much better than the first! She felt less fatigue, less nausea and just generally recovered more quickly this time around. I am pretty sure that her personal nurse (that would be me!) deserves most of the credit. But in all seriousness, what a blessing it was both to have Lisa with us and to see her feeling so much better!!! But keep praying- we do it all over again October 15th. #CancerSucks
    • Katie Shepherd Lebrato (New Garden Friends Meeting) shared with the Facebook world that she is expecting her first child! I remember seeing Katie with her mom Edith in the hospital a long time ago when Katie was born. Why do I suddenly want to start singing The Circle of Life? Congratulations to the Shepherd/Lebrato clan, and many prayers for Katie and the baby!
    • My dear friend Millie Simmons (Springfield Friends Meeting) asked for prayers for an unspoken need on Facebook yesterday. So I'm praying. Please join me.
    • Scott Farris (Wesley Memorial UMC & Lisa Jewett's son) started a new job this week as an EMT, gaining experience as he heads towards his goal of becoming a firefighter. Congrats Scott, and best of luck to you!
    • Leigh Ann Venable (Quaker Lake Camp) is at the end of her chemo treatments as she continues to kick cancer's butt. I marvel at her courage and her spirit, and pray often for her hubby Terry as well. Love and miss you both! #CancerStillSucks
    • Teresa Reep Tysinger (FUMC-K) continues to move closer to one of her dreams in life, becoming a published author. I'm so excited for for and continue to pray that the long process will keep moving forward. She is a gifted writer who has worked hard for this, and I know we are all cheering for her success!!! Plus, word came yesterday that she is becoming a Daisy Scout leader. Prayers for everyone!!!  LOL
    • Ann Saunders Baker (Springfield) shared this week that she has been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. I offer prayers and support to Ann- it's a disease I know a little too well! Also in the SFM family we continue to pray for Marie Allen Duke, whose due date for her new baby continues to draw near. Sending warm thoughts your was each and every day, Marie!
    • Beth Vestal McGalliard (New Garden Friends Meeting) you are amazing and I love you. That just needed to be shouted this morning!
    • A special Happy Birthday today to one of my favorite people, Hal Gastler (Wesley Memorial)! My extended family will celebrate lots of birthdays this month! Michelle Carroll on the 12th; Marilyn on the 16th; my Mom on the 17th; Scott Farris on the 23rd & Jerry Hanbery on the 30th.  And of course mine is this Tuesday, October 6th. Wondering what to get this old man (it's #56)? Funny you should ask...
    • The great Save It or Shave It? competition ends a midnight on Tuesday! The bottom line here is that we are raising money for Lisa Jewett through a Go Fund Me page by allowing you to vote on the fate of my trademark moustache. Every $5 you donate earns you a vote; donate $100 and I'll double your vote total. So far my 'stache is safe, but you could change that! I'm also waiting on opinions from old friends like Tammy Foster & Steve Semmler, who actually knew me BEFORE the birth of the 'stache. I have noticed that the women who have voted or voiced an opinion all want to save it; the guys mostly seem to want it gone. So I'm guessing that means it's muy macho and a little intimidating to the fellows. :)  Anyway, if you want to give me a great birthday present, click HERE, donate and vote. Every $5 will help Lisa in her battle. And for those of you who have already stepped up big- THANK YOU!!! And BTW- Hal & Joanne Gastler, the judges have ruled that in honor of Hal's birthday your donation, even though it came before the contest ever started, earned you guys the full 80 votes! Cast them carefully!!! #SavetheStache
So that's it for today! I hope you have a great weekend, and that your lives will be filled with blessings. Peace, my friends!

Saturday Shouts Outs- Old Friends Edition!

A week ago today I was waking up after a raucous night of food and fun at Ocean Isle Beach with many of my favorite people in the world, friends dating back to our childhoods- which you may know in my case was not a recent event! There had been a meal of Mexican Pile-Up, great desserts and a few adult beverages. A tense, hilarious males vs. females game of Catchphrase had completed the night, scarring some of us for life. That night was made special by the presence of our dear friend Lisa Moran, who had come down for just the one night. The entire 5 days the group spent together were a riot of laughter and love. Today, I want to share with you some of the moments that are still making me smile. It's a special reunion edition of my Saturday Shout Outs!

    • After a bit of prodding from my old pal Martha Ratledge Farlow, we broke into the Fig Newton Song (and dance) in the parking lot of a restaurant on Saturday night. Don't know the song? See it here ---->  Hit it Hal!!!
    • During the Catchphrase game, my lovely wife Marilyn got the phrase "Pull it off." To demonstrate, she began pulling on her top. As time ticked down and she became more desperate, she pulled harder. We all became concerned that she was about to strip, but fortunately it never reached that point. Although Steve Semmler was a little disappointed.
    • Carl Semmler brought a pound cake he made from his mother's classic recipe. Instead of keeping it with the desserts, it was kept with the breakfast foods, and many of us cut slices for our morning meal. Since eating cake for breakfast is frowned upon, the slices were referred to as Square Doughnuts. I miss them terribly...
    • Ever feel like telling someone they are full of crap? Chuck Foster gave us a much more subtle line to use- "You are a landfill of useless information." Too good.
    • We ate at Calabash on Thursday night, shutting down Captain John's. Literally. They turned off the lights as soon as we were out the door. Many, many hushpuppies gave their lives that night...
    • While trying to get the other women to guess the word "burp" while playing Catchphrase, Beth Vestal McGalliard became so animated that she fell off the stool she was sitting on...backwards. Fifteen minutes later, after the howls of laughter ceased, Rob Mitchell finally asked if she was OK. She was. So we laughed some more!
    • Tammy Foster really wanted us to play guitars and sing. So much so that after we failed to do so by Saturday afternoon she got the guitars out herself and handed them to us. We still tried really hard to not do anything, but Tammy was relentless. Finally Chuck and I played a few things, singing Wild Thing to Beth and a few of my old silly songs. It was fun. And Tammy is scary! And maybe a little mean...#NoFilter  :)
    • Each time we traveled during the week those of us in Condo 103 all rode in Tim & Allison Vail's van. The 6 of us were a team, united in our efforts when grocery shopping and other efforts. Condo 101 always took separate vehicles. So clearly we were the better condo. That just needed to be said.
    • Lisa Ramos Moran played Catchphrase right along with us, and at one point she was giving clues for the phrase "soul mate." She said it was 2 words you might use as term of endearment for your partner, and Denise May Langley blurted out this guess- Spousal Unit.  Truth is stranger than fiction.
    • Carl S. was trying to get the guys to guess the song title "Jailhouse Rock" and gave the clues an Elvis song about prison. Martha, who was supposed to be quiet since she was on the other team, guessed Love Me Tender. That's just wrong on so many levels...
    • Several people brought photo albums full of fun (if a bit horrifying) pictures from our younger days together. As Andy Maynard remarked on Saturday night, this group has known each other a VERY long time. And as much as we have all changed, our relationships are still pretty much the same. So much fun to be with that group, even if it did take us 5 days instead of 5 minutes to polish off a bag of Sweet 16 Powdered Sugar Doughnuts. Age has its price.  :)
    • And finally (or this could go on for hours)...during the game Friday night I was sitting on a sofa with Denise and Steve. Something happened and I reached out to give an "air" high five to Martha across the room. At that instant, the couch collapsed under us, leaving us startled and the rest of the room rolling on the floor laughing. We were troopers however, continuing to sit there for the rest of the game. Of course, I took  most of the blame, being the largest and also having moved slightly just before the event. Denise was clearly an innocent victim, having been brave enough to sit with us in the first place. But after discussion with the sofa owners, Beth & Bob McGalliard, we discovered they had been expecting it to happen (So the lawsuit is pending. WHIPLASH!). We also agreed it was Steve's fault. It's always the pretty ones!
I hope this gives you a little taste of what it was like for me to hang out with people who have been special to me for 43 years now. I miss them already, and look forward to doing it again next year. And in case you are wondering, 2 updates- the game ended in a tie and the couch was saved and is still in use. Have a great weekend!
    "Enjoy every sandwich."

    Saturday Shout Outs!

If you read this blog at all then you know that life has been kinda crazy these past few weeks. Life tends to be that way from time to time. There have been many posts about questions, doubts and frustrations- because those are the things on the tips of fingers when I write these days. But those things are fleeting, and will pass as we keep the faith and we keep praying. The things that are real- the things that are permanent- are things like God's love and the friendship, courage and support we can offer each other. And those things are plentiful in my life. They are the things we remember here today as we do our Saturday Shout Outs! So keep reading, and be encouraged. There is much to be thankful for...

    • Marilyn and I are so thankful for all the thoughts and prayers sent our way since Conner's death and Will's departure for UCF. We miss them both very much. The house is very strange still, but we are adjusting. And we are used to that. Tomorrow marks 29 years of marriage. We KNOW how to adjust!
    • Prayers continue for Lisa Moran, whose courage and spirit know no limits in her fight with pancreatic cancer, but whose body is struggling. We love you Lisa, and pray that you will be able to join us on...
    • September 9th (good LORD willin' and the creek don't rise!) we head to Ocean Isle, NC for a gathering of some old friends for a few days at the beach. I'm not just excited to see Denise, Carl, Beth, Tammy, Steve, Rob and all the rest- I NEED this getaway.
    • In the past week I got sweet notes from Jay Osborne, Susan McBane TuggleLeigh Ann Venable, Marie Allen Duke, Cheryl Deal Meadows, Ashley Goad and Teresa Tysinger offering words of comfort and encouragement. I also got calls from Jan KoernerJennifer Kuramochi and our old buddy Lewis Farlow. Old friends ROCK!!!
    • We have seen on Facebook where Jennifer (Gastler) Chan and Isabelle Davis Randolph are expecting! Prayers for both of these wonderful former youth as they go forward. And I SOOOO look forward to Debbie Davis being a grandmother!!!
    • As if it was really needed, here's further proof that Taylor Swift is cooler than you...or me...or most anyone else...

    • Speaking of great songs, Tammy Foster requested that I prepare a few Brown/Jones classics for the beach trip. Anything in particular, Tammy? The Parakeet Song? We've Got Gas? Roll Over Lucy? Cast your votes!!!
    • While moving Will into his luxury accommodations last weekend we got to share whatever meal it is you have at 4 PM with the Hanbery clan! Great to see them and to know they are local to Will's new home. Jerry is already making plans. Oh. My. Goodness.  :)
    • Speaking of Jerry...he ran an idea past me that I will now run past my other Kissimmee era friends. He was wondering - if we booked part of the Betsy B for a long weekend in the Fall of 2016 (perhaps right after Labor Day) could we get folks to commit to joining us? So...could we? Voice your opinion here! I know Brook Teoli is pushing for another reunion. We need input!
    • I'm only gone for 21 years and the NC Yearly Meeting of Friends just falls apart. I knew they couldn't make it without me...
    • Another reason to be jealous of my son's new college digs. He has a Bojangles close by. We in Tampa do not. This is just wrong!
    • For those of us living in Tampa Bay, here's the big question. What's more likely to be a dud- Tropical Storm Erika or the 2015 Tampa Bay Buccaneers? Right now it's even money.
    • And finally...as many of you (over 400 of you read yesterday's post Maybe Chicken Little Was Right) know Lisa Jewett is having major surgery on Monday. So let's make tomorrow Prayers for Lisa Day! How do we participate, you ask? First of all- PRAY! Secondly, send her a message on Facebook, Twitter (@lisajewett18) or by leaving a comment here. Let her know that we are with her and God is for her. And finally, pray some more. We can be her support team on Monday by lifting her to God tomorrow. Prayer matters.
That's it for today. Have a great Saturday and keep smiling.

      Monday Musings

Having survived a couple of weeks of time away from Tampa, there are a series of random thoughts running through my head this morning as I attempt to write. Since none of them seem to be worthy of an entire post, I'll just share them all- shotgun style! Enjoy!

      • It occurred to me over the weekend that we have now lived in this house in Tampa for over 8 years. That's the longest I've lived anywhere since moving out of my parent's home all those years ago. Counting our previous time in Tampa (2001-2006) we've been here a long time now. For Will, Tampa is certainly home. I'm still trying to decide...
      • It was good to spend time with Marilyn's family over the past 2 weeks. There were lots of laughs and lots of stories, along with fond memories of her dad. There were also some tense moments and reminders that being a family is not always easy...or fun. And we experienced first hand with her brother-in-law that Alzheimer's is a terrible, horrible disease. Prayers for Bill (and Marilyn's sister Carol) are appreciated.
      • One month from today we will be at Ocean Isle, NC hanging out on the beach with some our favorite people in the world. And it can't get here soon enough!
      • A couple of other prayer requests for you. Ashley Goad is currently in Uganda doing mission work, and my friend Lisa Moran continues to struggle in her battle with cancer. Prayer matters.
      • If you know me you know that I believe everyone is entitled to their own beliefs and opinions, just as I am entitled to mine. But I need to announce an exception. If you believe that Donald Trump and that thing on his head should be our next President, we have a big problem. BIG!

      • Following up on that, I really miss Jon Stewart. Already.
      • Following up on that, but not as much as I missed Lisa Jewett while we were gone!
      • I've been re-reading my book Even Better Than Before, this time without trying to do rewrites as I go. And you know what? I really like it. It has a greater emotional depth than I remembered. It's almost like the characters are real people to me. Oh wait... :)  If you want a copy shoot me an e-mail at youthguy07@aol.com and I'll make sure you get one!
      • When I was a kid my very favorite comic books featured The Fantastic Four. I loved the 2005 movie and thought they captured well the spirit I remembered from those old days. I never understood why others disliked those first 2 movies so much; and understand even less why this new one strayed so far from the comics on purpose. I have not seen it; I WILL not see it. I hope it tanks so badly that FOX will relinquish the rights and let them go back to Marvel Studios where they belong. Will and I dream of seeing a scene with the real Human Torch (Chris Evans) and Captain America (also Chris Evans) side by side!
      • Traffic continues to be at an all-time high here on the blog, with all 7 of my recent Beach Boys posts now having over 1000 views and several others nearing that milestone number. Thank you for reading!
      • Will moves into his new apartment in Orlando on August 22nd. The countdown is on and it's real. His new adventure at UCF awaits!
      • The 6th anniversary of this blog is rapidly approaching- August 26th. What a long strange trip it's been...
I hope you found my musings to be worthwhile and at least somewhat amusing! Have a wonderful Monday and a blessed week!

      Saturday Shout Outs!

Greetings and salutations, friends and neighbors! The middle month of summer is in full swing, so it's time to do July's Saturday Shout Outs! There's a lot going on in the coming days and lots of people who are on my mind. The next few weeks will bring visits with old friends and family, some Myrtle Beach time for Marilyn, her mom & sisters and I, and big doings in Will's life. Plus there lots more of my Beach Boys countdown still to come here on the blog. Exciting times for sure! So let's get on with the shouting!!!

      • We need to continue to be in prayer for Leigh Ann Everhart Venable and Lisa Ramos Moran as they deal with treatments for cancer. I would ask for prayers for my mother-in-law Marie Steele as she deals with some of the hardships of advancing age and mobility issues. Marie Allen Duke continues on with her pregnancy and that is always a reason to pray. If you know folks who should be on my prayer list, please shoot me an e-mail at youthguy07@aol.com and let me know.
      • Brook Teoli Phelps and her crew are going to be around Tampa on the 18th and we look forward to seeing her! If you know Brook and would like to piggyback on our visit gie me a holler and we'll see what we can do!
      • Will turns 20 on July 16th. That should make some of you feel old. It makes me feel very old. He also graduates from St. Pete College with his AA on the 23rd and heads to the University of Central Florida in late August. We are sending him to Orlando to help Melissa Hanbery deal with Jerry.  :)
      • I walk our dog Conner several times a day. He's 12 now, so it is often at a leisurely pace. On occasion he gets some pep in his step and breaks into a trot, and when he does I often called him Trotsky, as in "Slow down, Trotsky." One of our new neighbors overheard me say that the other day and looked confused, asking if that was really his name. I fully expect to be featured soon a a Fox News segments about the influx of communist dog walkers in our nation. (If you don't get the joke, see a history teacher- PRONTO!
      • On July 27, Marilyn and I will head north to NC to visit her family and some old friends for a few days. We will be in Greensboro early in the week and Elkin for the weekend. Let me know if you'd like to try and catch up in this very small window of time. Then on August 3rd Marilyn, her mom, her sisters and I will head to Myrtle Beach for 5 days. Yay beach!!!
      • While in NC it is also my plan to venture over to Durham and visit with Jason Huffman, my brother from another mother on Twitter whom I have never met in person. The Texan is at Duke taking some seminary classes in July. I'm so excited to finally get to meet Jason!
      • FYI, I tried to burn down a parking garage in downtown Tampa yesterday, and in the process nearly electrocuted myself. But that's a story for another day. In the business we call that a TEASE...
      • Traffic here on the blog continues to be crazy (over 1000 hits again yesterday!), with the first 2 posts in my series on The Beach Boys still setting records! If you enjoyed the first day of my countdown this past Thursday but were frustrated because you didn't know a lot of the songs, try it again by clicking HERE. Every song title is now a link to the song on YouTube, and the rest of countdown will feature that as well. Always glad to cater to the lazy people among us- I am your king!
      • We're less than 2 months away from a second beach trip, this one to Ocean Isle with some of our favorite old (and OLD!) friends! I cannot wait to reunited with Steve, Carl, Beth, Denise, Tammy, Lisa, Rob, Tim and their spouses, as well as (hopefully) a few others we are still waiting to hear from. Sharks be damned- we're coming for you, Atlantic Ocean!
      • Is it just me, or is the Pizza Hot Dog thing seriously disturbing?
      • Sometimes it is hard to tell a person how much you care about them. But sometimes it can be just as hard to restrain yourself from saying the very same things. Occasionally both are required of us.
      • Is anyone else watching Under the Dome or Zoo this summer? I'm loving both shows. And while we're at it, I am thrilled that TBS is showing Rules of Engagement reruns early (6-7 am) weekday mornings. One of the most underrated sitcoms of the last decade.
      • And finally...Marilyn, Lisa Jewett and I are off to see Minions this morning as our Big Movie Summer continues! I haven't seen anything I didn't like yet, so here's hoping the streak continues. And for those of you who have been wondering...I saw Love & Mercy 3 times before it left theaters here in Tampa this week. Once alone, once with Will and once with Marilyn. Be sure and catch it when it comes out on Blu-Ray.
So that's it for today. Have a great Saturday and remember to enjoy every moment you are given with the ones you love. Peace, my friends!

      Saturday Shout Outs!

June has arrived and so has another edition of my Saturday Shouts Outs! There's a lot going on in the coming weeks, and there are some special announcements hidden in the text below. Today also features a few creative updates on my personal philosophies of life- the things I find to be most important these days. If you think you know me, you might want to double check! I like to think of myself as constantly evolving. Ha! So anyway, jump in, hang on and enjoy! Let's get started...

      * Congrats to all of my school teacher friends who have survived (or have nearly survived!) another school year! Enjoy your summer. It will be shorter than you wish!

      * My favorite world traveler, Ashley Goad, is currently in Russia doing mission work for the church. Prayers are welcome!

      * The Soiree at Chez Hanbery for all of our FUMC-Kissimmee alumni is coming up June 20th from 2 PM until at Jerry's residence in Orlando. For more details and to RSVP visit the event page in the Kissimmee Facebook group or text me at 813-919-3755. We're excited!

      *  Our dear friends Karen & Jimmy Chester (parents of proud mama Brittany) became grandparents again this week! Many blessings on their family- they are some of the sweetest people we know!

      Ben Bishop
      * Stanley Cup Finals, game 2 tonight in Tampa. Mathematically speaking it is not a must win game, as you must lose 4 times to lose a best of 7 series and this is only game 2. But in every other way this is a MUST WIN game for my Bolts. Let's go Lightning! Side note: While cheering like crazy for the hometown Bolts, I do have a confession- Patrick Kane of the Blackhawks is worth the price of admission! What a player!

      * Philosophy Update #1: "You know life is like a train. It's bearing down on you, and guess what? It's gonna hit you! So you can either start running when it's far off in the distance, or you can pull up a chair, crack open a beer, and just watch it come!" ~ Eric Forman, That 70s Show  And I say bring it on!

      * Will Jones is officially enrolled at the University of Central Florida for August! He enters as a junior and still plans to major in Film Studies. We are so proud of who he is and excited for what is to come!

      * We're less than 3 months away from a NC beach reunion with some of the people we love most in this world, and we're still hoping for even a few more old friends to join the party. Just as long as they don't want the pink beach chair. There's a LOT of controversy over the pink beach chair...

      * Philosophy Update #2: I can't even explain how much I love this quote...

      * It is clear to me at this point that Facebook does not like my blog anymore. For several years my analytics showed about 50 hits a DAY coming from links we posted on FB. This past WEEK there were only 17 visits, and that's been normal for well over a month now. If people have quit reading I can deal with that- although it seems unlikely to me that everyone quit reading all at once! If they aren't seeing the links very often, then that is frustrating. Thus endeth the rant.

      * Love & Mercy, the new film about the life of Beach Boy Brian Wilson, opened yesterday in limited release. As soon as it hits Tampa I will be there! I just don't know yet when that will be...

      * Philosophy Update #3: "Don't goin' shooting all the dogs down just 'cause one's got fleas!" ~ Brandon Flowers, Dreams Come True  It's past time to stop looking at labels and start seeing individuals. We are all uniquely created.

      * Tomorrow is the one year anniversary of an unhappy day in my life, and I am feeling a need to vent a bit. So tomorrow is also the beginning of a very personal 4-day blog series in which I will deal with some things for the first time. Most of you know I was at one point on probation; most of you know that 14 months ago that probation was terminated. But I have never written about what it was like while I was ON probation. That is going to change between tomorrow and Wednesday. So hold on...

      * Philosophy Update #4: No more focusing on flaws, in myself or in others. Let's focus on the joys and sorrows we all deal with, not on the smelly parts of our lives!

      * I ask for prayers for my friends Lisa Ramos Moran and Leigh Ann Everhart Venable, both continuing to deal with treatments for cancer. Prayers are also lifted for all of those who are dealing with stress and sickness, family issues or personal demons. It's a tough world. We all need prayers.

      * Philosophy Update #5: "When you get up in the morning and you see that crazy sun, keep me in your heart for a while. There's a train leaving nightly called when all is said and done, keep me in your heart for a while."  ~ Warren Zevon, Keep Me In Your Heart
The late great songwriter composed those words after he knew was dying with mesothelioma. The song is an anthem to holding tight the people and the memories that matter because we simply do not know what tomorrow holds. David Letterman once asked the terminally ill singer if he understood more about life as he approached death, and if so, what advice could he offer. Zevon's famous answer? "Enjoy every sandwich.

That's it for today. So to sum up our philosophy lesson- laugh, love, forgive, never regret a smile, don't label people, focus on the positive and enjoy every sandwich. Kissing slowly is optional. :) Those are my new goals each and every day. Have a blessed day, and I do hope you'll come back tomorrow. If not, then please do "keep me in your heart for a while..."

      Saturday Shout Outs! (A-Z Edition)

Today's Shout Outs! will have a bit of a different look from the usual shouting. Today I will attempt to shout out alphabetically, giving each of the 26 letters a thought that has been on my mind, It is important to know as we begin that this is likely to be a disaster, but such is often the case with change and experimentation. So without further hoopla allow me to preset the first (and quite likely LAST) A-Z Saturday Shout Outs! Here we go:

A- This morning Marilyn, Lisa Jewett, Will (who has already seen it once) and myself are off to see Avengers: Age of Ultron. I am giddy with anticipation!
B- After much dreaming, a group of my oldest and bestest buddies will be headed to the BEACH together in September. After less than a week of publicity there are already 16 definites and a maybe. This is simply going to ROCK!!!
C- Thinking about the beach leads directly to thinking about Calabash for me and my stomach. And you know what I want...
D- Deluxe Seafood Platter with LOTS of hushpuppies, please!
E- At the suggestion of several volunteer readers I am back at work on my book manuscript, Even Better Than Before. Some readers wanted more background on the relationships between the characters, so that is my new adventure. If you were a volunteer and haven't given me any feedback, I would still love to hear from you. And not to pile on the guilt, but Marilyn has indeed finished it now. So no more excuses!
F- You should all be in Florida this weekend. The weather is simply spectacular!
G- Garsh- I sure do miss Goofy...
H- I have recently fallen in love with Hockey. Baseball is still my game, but the NHL is so much better than the NBA. Here's how I see it: Hockey is a fast-moving, fluid sport interrupted by an occasional mauling, while the NBA is a constant mauling interrupted by the occasional fast break. Plus hockey has zambonis. We have a winner! And Go Bolts!
I- So far this is working out okay. INCONCEIVABLE
J- Jameis Winston in a Buccaneer. Our history with the number one pick in the draft is rather weak. Here's hoping Jameis breaks the cycle!
K- Following the adventures of Kelly Jeck Trace on Facebook and Twitter just wears me out. So proud of her and her company, Reach. Go get'em, Kelly!
L- Lisa Kraus Spires and her daughter Abby have had a rough week as Abby has been unable to get rid of a fever. Prayers. please!
M- Even though it is barely May, it is already starting to feel like summer. For those of you who passed through my youth groups over the years, what is your favorite memory from our summer adventures?
N- We have in-home Wifi, a connected blu ray player and access to Michelle's (Will's girlfriend) password and account, but every time we try to use Netflix on our TV there is some sort of snafu. I feel like we may be the only people not watching...
O- Only 11 more letters go go! I think I can, I think I can...
P- Pancakes. I really wish I was having pancakes smothered in bananas and strawberries for breakfast right now. Anyone deliver?
Q- I have Quaker friends all over the country, and some most days I really miss them. A lot.
R- My youth director at the end of my high school years was Rob Mitchell. This week he did one of the sweetest, most generous things it has ever been my pleasure to witness. All these years later and he's still teaching us the right way to do things.
S- Steve Semmler is the guy responsible for making the upcoming beach trip (see B) a reality. He is my hero. It's a reunion just like in my book (see E). Now if he can just make the real trip THAT interesting he will hit legendary status!
T- Most every weekday morning I sit down with a bowl of cereal and a cup of coffee to enjoy the wit and wisdom of That 70s Show on ABC Family. I've seen every episode numerous times, but it still makes me laugh out loud. That was my era. Those are my people. And Kelso is one of the all-time great stupid people.
U- Random things I think about... is there any chance Underdog could become an Avenger?
V- This one is close to cheating, but it needs to be said. I am going to miss David Letterman very, VERY much.
W- Hey Todd Willis- light a fire under Hanbery and let's have a get together soon! Miss you guys!
X- Ok- so I have nothing here. I could offer to Xerox my book for you, or claim that I am taking Xylophone lessons, or wonder about the future of the X-Men movie franchise. But all of that would just be filling space...
Y- As part of my diabetic diet I eat a lot of sugar-free Yogurt. I am really starting to hate sugar-free yogurt. Do NOT offer me sugar-free yogurt if I come visit. Thank you!
Z- Zoinks!!! We made it, Scooby! That's the end of the alphabet. Now let's go finds some pancakes!

And thus ends my attempt to shout my way through the alphabet. I hope it made you smile on this Saturday morning. Now it's time to go watch Hulk smash!!!

      Love you guys,

      Saturday Shout Outs!

Happy Saturday friends and neighbors, and welcome to another edition of the Shout Outs! I hope that April has been good to you so far and that you all had a fabulous Easter. Life is good here, with summertime temps and lots of sunshine. The last 14 days have seen lots of traffic here at the blog, with my Holy Week posts getting lots of attention. Also, the first two entries in my Things I Believe (and you probably don't!) series- Haven't We Been Here Before & Do We Even WANT to be Like Jesus? - are two of my most read posts ever. It's exciting to know people are responding to what I write, and it makes me want to keep pushing the envelope and writing what I believe. But now it's time to shout. LOUD! Here we go!

      • My prayers and love go out to two very special women in NC, both of whom I have known for many years, who share a September 10th birthday and a battle against cancer. Leigh Ann Venable (Quaker Lake) and Lisa Moran (New Garden Friends) are inspiring so many with their faith, strength and courage as they battle this horrible disease. Please keep them and their families in your thoughts and prayers. #CancerSucks
      • My favorite new album in a very long time came out on Tuesday, and I cannot stop listening! Brian Wilson, the founder of The Beach Boys, released No Pier Pressure featuring collaborations with a number of artists including Nate Ruess of FUN. and former Beach Boys Al Jardine, David Marks and Blondie Chaplin. If you like great melodies and amazing vocals, check it out. Soooo good...
      • Congratulations to Elizabeth Tillman Barwick (TNT/Springfield Friends) on the birth of a son, Tillman Frederick Barwick, on April 3rd. Mom and baby are doing well, and we celebrate with the family!
      • Where the heck did National Siblings Day come from? I had never heard of it before yesterday. And when is National I Only Have 7 Toes Day?  Just saying...
      • I was just wondering this week- can Lisa Kraus Spires (FUMC-Kissimmee) still eat her weight in crab legs? We need to get together soon and find out, Lisa! My mind is so odd...
      • OK baseball fans, I need your help. My Tampa Bay Rays have a really good chance of being awful this season. I will continue to support them, but I am looking for a back-up plan featuring a team that might actually be in a pennant race at the end of the summer. Nominations are now being accepted, but I'm leaning toward the Tigers because they have David Price and the Padres because they have Wil Myers - both ex-Rays whom I loved. But I am willing to listen to other arguments.
      • Speaking of baseball...do any of my former Springfield Friends Meeting youth remember the night we went to a Braves/Dodgers doubleheader in Atlanta and the TBS cameras caught some of you sleeping in the stadium seats?  Good times...
      • Hey old friends from my days as a youth at New Garden Friends Meeting- remember the time we raced our way back from Myrtle Beach in a bunch of cars and waited until stop lights turned red to go through them so no one else could and various other stupid things? Thought about that episode this week and even some 38 years later I still just can't believe we did that!
      • My Twitter friends have been so supportive and encouraging over these past few weeks, even more that usual! If you're on Twitter and we don't follow each other, I'm @Youthguy07. Hit me up!
      • Hey Lisa Jewett (Wesley Memorial UMC)- it's finally time. A trip to Clearwater Beach and Crabby's for a Mahi sandwich is in our future. Marilyn is ready. I'm ready. Let's do it!
      • We have heard through the grapevine that the legend himself, Jerry Hanbery (FUCM-K), wants to have a big party at his house that will be a mini-reunion for central Florida locals who survived our years together. No plans have actually been made, so this is here today for 2 reasons. One, to put the pressure on Jerry. And two, so I can type the following phrase: Party at Jerry's house!!!
      • And finally...  My book, Even Better Than Before, got lots of good reviews (and a few great ones!) from those who received a copy via e-mail. But there are still quite a few of you who owe me a book review. No pressure or threats (YET) but I am curious to know what you thought. Or if you were even able to finish it. So give me a shout if you get a chance, and I will be very (or for a few old friend who go WAY back, VURY) appreciative.
So there you have it, a random assortment of rambling shout outs. Enjoy the weekend. It's good to be alive!

      Saturday Shout Outs!

The Ides of March are almost upon us, and that can only mean one thing- Julius Ceasar is going to die! But if it could mean two things, the second would be that it's time for a brand new edition of the Saturday Shout Outs! Spring has finally sprung in places that thought they might never see grass again, and here in Florida we're back into 80 degree days. Whatever your location and weather, I hope your faces are sunny and your days are bright! Now let's get busy and do some shouting...

      •  Tomorrow is the 12th birthday of the one and only Conner the Dog. Although 12 is fairly old for a cocker spaniel, our favorite mutt continues to be pretty lively- and a VERY early riser! He has asked for a steak and an ice cream cake for his party. The jury is still out on that one.
      •  Our prayers continue to be with the family of Wayne Gless (Springfield Friends Meeting) who passed away on March 3rd. Jane, Patsy, Ken, Gilly & Kaitlyn are on our hearts every day. When I wrote about Wayne last week (Remembering a Sweet, Sweet Spirit) I said that I didn't have any crazy stories about him. Marilyn reminded me that I was wrong. Once, during open worship at SFM, Wayne rose to speak about my work as the youth pastor and tell the congregation what a difference I was making in the lives of students. As part of the evidence he reported how Marilyn and I dealt with so many things, including middle of the night phone calls from troubled youth. Up until that Sunday we had rarely received such phone calls. After Wayne reported how well we handled the issue, they started pouring in! But that was classic Wayne- one of the most supportive church members we ever had the pleasure of knowing. He is missed.
      • Lately I have been overwhelmed by the number of former youth who have asked for prayers for their families as they deal with separation and/or divorce. I will not list names, but if you are one of those who has been crying out please know God hears your hearts, and I and many others are praying for you. Peace be with you, my friends.
      • I saw on Facebook where June Crotty (FUMC-Kissimmee) passed away this week. June and her husband Clyde were driving forces in that church for many years. They gave us use of their lake house one Sunday every summer for a Breakaway and we always enjoyed their company. Their grandsons Wayne and Kendall were active (and quite entertaining!) members of our youth family as well. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family.
      • There was a rumor going around this week amidst all the crazy wheelings and dealings in the NFL that the New Orleans Saints might trade the incredible Drew Brees to my lowly Buccaneers. I know it won't happen. But please, just let me bask in the glow of that glorious rumor for a few days before shooting it down. Drew Brees is a great football player and a class act. The Bucs have very few of either these days...
      • So this week we found out that the Walt Disney Company plans to rename the Disney Hollywood Studios (again); make a live action Dumbo movie (Did someone discover an actual flying elephant? If not, this is a DUMB idea!); and that Frozen 2 (the original has already taken over the them parks) has been given the green light. Suddenly being banned doesn't hurt quite so much!  LOL
      • I'm currently reading the new book from my old friend Brent Bill (Quaker Lake & lots of other Quaker things!) and Jennie Isbell. It's called Finding God In The Verbs- Crafting a Fresh Language of Prayer and so far it absolutely wonderful! If your prayer life needs a swift kick in the butt, this book will supply the foot. Available on Amazon.
      • 2o years ago I could have named the starting line-ups for every ACC team as they headed into the annual ACC basketball tournament. This year I cannot name a single player who doesn't play for UNC or Duke. I'm not watching at all. It's finally happened- I've become a full-fledged Floridian, more interested in Spring Training baseball and off-season football than college basketball at tournament time. I weep for myself. I do still hear news sometimes...so just let me say GO HEELS!
      • And finally...most of you know that I was blessed with 2 wonderful parents. You also know that I was "raised" in jr. high and high school by a youth group family that made me so much of who I am today. We found out yesterday that a member of that family is very sick. For now I will leave this an anonymous request. We pray for healing and peace for my friend and their family. Please join me.
Have a wonderful weekend, my friends.

      Saturday Shout Outs!

It's time for the February edition of my Saturday Shout Outs!- and love is in the air! Yes love- in addition to candy, flowers, cards and the occasional romantic getaway. February 14th also happens to be a birth date shared by two of my favorite people, Jill Painter Watson (FUMC-Kissimmee) and Susan McBane Tuggle (Quaker Lake Camp). Happy birthday, ladies! It's not polite to mention a woman's age, but it always made Jill happy that she was younger than me. Susan has never known that feeling. :) So now that I'm already in trouble, let's get on with the shouting!

      • Marilyn and I are planning to head to FUMC-Kissimmee for the 11 am worship service on Sunday, February 22nd to hear our old friend Wayne Cook preach and hopefully get some lunch with he and Janet. Let's make it a party! We hope anyone who can join us that Sunday will join us and let Wayne know we love him!
      • Join me in praying for Todd (FUMC-K) & Kristin Willis and family. Kristin's father is struggling with major health issues and they need to feel our love and support.
      • We also continue to pray for Springfield Friends Meeting as they seek a new Senior Pastor. Their last 3 have been people I loved and respected so much. Those are not easy shoes to fill...
      • Thought For the Day- repeating your opinion over and over again on social media does not make it the truth. You may think it's a fact, but in truth it is still just your opinion. The world needs more open minds.
      • Now that the Saturday Night Live Rewind marathon on VH1 Classic is coming to an end my life can return to normal. Just in time for Spring Training. :)
      • Meagan Hill Halquist's (FUMC-K) grandmother went to be with the LORD this week. Prayers go out to Meagan and her family.
      • It's been over a month now since I emailed out about 35 copies of my book, Even Better Than Before. I have gotten responses back from 12 readers so far, all very positive. Both Carl and Steve Semmler (New Garden Friends Meeting) offered constructive advice that may lead to a little rewriting on my part, giving more background on a few of the characters. However, Steve, your suggestion about adding certain "interactions" between specific characters may have to wait. The one thing I think all of the reviewers agree on so far is that they want to go to the beach and eat seafood- NOW! Thanks again to all who are still reading.
      • Brook Teoli Phelps (FUMC-K) will be in central Florida (she lives in Cali) in late July, and she would love to see some of the old Kissimmee crew! So let's be thinking abut getting the old gang back together again! Ca you say Reunion 2- the Sequel?
      • It feels like every time we post a link to this blog on Facebook these days it immediately disappears, and the number of people visiting each day from Facebook has dropped dramatically, If people aren't clicking on the links, that's cool. If people aren't seeing them, that is not. So I'm curious- and I'm shouting at Facebook!!!
      • And finally, for all my dear friends and readers...

      Because of Jesus,

      Saturday Shout Outs!

Happy Saturday!!! We're approaching the end of January and the unofficial national holiday that makes us all stop, fix some of our favorite foods, gather with friends and wait to see happens next. I'm speaking, of course, of the impending twin birthday celebrations of Cyndi Reep Browning and Teresa Reep Tysinger (FUMC-Kissimmee) this coming Thursday! Oh...and there's that whole Super Bowl thing going on as well. Anyway it feels like there's a lot to shout about, so if anyone still reads these things (HINT: Leave a comment!) I believe that is exactly what I will do. Shout. Here we go!

      * To all of our friends living in areas where you are cold and getting some slippery precipitation, here's a little salt in your wounds. Our air conditioner has not been working properly this week-  and that MATTERS here in Florida...  Sorry. :)

      * Last Friday I e-mailed copies of Even Better Than Before to those who requested it (if you want one just give me a holler!), and by Saturday morning I have received two positive reviews. My friends Susan Tuggle and Donna Myers (both of Quaker Lake fame) had read it in one night. I am left to assume that either the book is much easier to read than it was to write or that 60,000 words are not as many as I thought. Or maybe it was like a train wreck. They just couldn't look away! :)  In any case, I appreciated their efforts and the feedback. Can a digital book still be a "page turner?" Things that make you go hmmm...

      * It is rare for me to have a team I care about in the Super Bowl. Usually I am one of those lame guys who says, "I just hope it's a good game." This year is different. While the Seahawks are not my favorite team by any means, the Patriots are at the top of my despised list. This will be a good game as long as the Seahawks win, and will be a GREAT game if they "deflate" the Pretty Boy and company by 40 points or so. Anybody coming over to watch with us?

      * Erin Augenblick Shannon (FUMC-K) had a birthday this week. There has also been a lot going on in her life after her husband's business burned in a fire a few weeks back. Plus she lives in Michigan and it's January. So it seems like a really good time to add Erin to your prayer list. She's certainly on mine.

      * A number of you who are previewing my book for me have had sweet things to say about it, and I appreciate your willingness to read it so much. Steve Semmler (New Garden Friends Meeting) let me know he enjoyed it. Denise May Langley (New Garden & QLC), who pushed me to both start and finish the project, has given me her thumbs up. Our friend Lisa Jewett has read more than 5 pages, which I count as a win for me- even if she is mad because the book is making her want to go to Myrtle Beach, eat hot doughnuts and finish off the day with dinner at Calabash! Brook Teoli Phelps & Lisa Krause Spires (of my FUMC-K group) both let me know they they were having a hard time putting it down. Even Marilyn has started reading it! Lisa Spires texted me the picture you see here. She may have unlocked the key to enjoying my novel- read while enjoying a cold adult beverage. Fits right in with the storyline! I am eagerly awaiting more reviews, more questions and more suggestions.

Erin Moran Hill (from our Springfield Friends Meeting days) & family (including our dear friends Butch and Barbara Moran) were at Walt Disney World this week where despite an unfortunate illness they still managed to have a good time. Jeremy Godwin and family (also Springfield) were there as well. Weeks like this remind me how ridiculous it is and how angry it makes me that I can't go there and meet up with old friends. Ugh. Ok, I vented. Time to move on.

      * My favorite random question anyone has asked me about my book so far- "Does Brent only have 7 toes too?"

      * Spring Training games for Major League Baseball begin in about 40 days. This March, for the first time in what feels like forever, I will be free to travel a bit and catch a few games outside of Tampa. Who's ready to join me?

      * If she were local I know that Ashley Goad (Springfield) would be my baseball buddy for the entire month. But in other Ashley news, she is now a proud homeowner in Shreveport, LA. Congratulations, Prudence! I know you will love your new home for the 10 weeks a year you are actually in the country!  :)

      * And finally...I am totally addicted to the new tv series Scorpion. I love the characters and the interaction between them. Plus the action is great without being too over-the-top. If you haven't tried it, give it a shot. Tell Walter that Carl sent ya!

That's it for today. Have a blessed weekend. And thanks for reading!

      Because of Jesus,
